Protecting Your New Puppy: Preventing Parvo and Other Diseases

Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting milestone, but it’s also a critical time to safeguard your puppy’s health. Puppies are vulnerable to dangerous illnesses like parvovirus, giardia, and distemper, even when they’ve received two rounds of vaccinations before leaving us.

While they do have some protection, their immune systems are still developing, leaving them susceptible to infections. Here’s how you can keep your puppy safe during this crucial period:

Avoid Public Places and Populated Areas

Until your puppy has completed their full vaccination schedule, it’s essential to avoid letting them touch the ground in public places or areas frequented by other dogs, such as parks, pet stores, public potty areas and walk ways as well as rest stops. These environments can harbor viruses and bacteria that are harmful to young puppies.

If your puppy must go outside in such areas, wipe their paws thoroughly with sanitizing wipes after each outing. Be diligent and ensure no debris or germs are left behind.

Insurance Activation Before Pickup

To give your puppy the best protection, we provide complimentary insurance through Trupanion, which must be activated before your puppy leaves us. This insurance covers treatment for illnesses such as parvo, giardia, and distemper, should your puppy contract anything during their transition home.

We require proof of activation before releasing your puppy. This step ensures peace of mind for both of us, knowing your puppy is covered in the event of an emergency, and no unrealistic out of pocket expenses if the emergency arises.

Monitor and Report Your Puppy’s Health

Once your puppy leaves our care in proven good health, it’s vital to monitor where they’ve been and what they’ve been exposed to. If your puppy shows signs of illness, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, notify your vet immediately.

Share your puppy’s recent exposure history to help pinpoint the source of infection.

We also ask that you inform us if your puppy becomes ill. As breeders, we invest significant time, care, and love into raising each puppy. Staying updated on their health allows us to continue supporting you and learn how our puppies thrive after leaving us.

Safe Environments Only

Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, keep them in controlled and safe environments. This means sticking to your home, your yard, or areas you know are free of other unvaccinated animals. Avoid high-risk areas to give your puppy the best chance of staying healthy.

Bringing a puppy into your family is a joyful experience, but it comes with responsibilities to protect their health. By following these starter guidelines, you can ensure your new puppy grows into a strong, happy, and healthy dog.
